In the vast and culturally diverse Congolese region of Central Africa, masks function as performance objects in rituals, ceremonies, worship, and entertainment. Masks represent the artisans and performers who brought them to life, as well as, varied communities, belief systems, and natural resources.

Come! Be inspired; create a mask that reminds you of your community while listening to Congolese music at Hardywood Park Brewery on Nov 25. Also, experience a Congolese dance performance by Culture4MyKids at 2:30pm.

Learn more about this African region and their rich masking tradition by visiting VMFA’s exhibition, Congo Masks: Masterpieces from Central Africa on view now through February 24, 2019.
