Sara Curtin (WDC)

Sara Curtin is an electric singer/songwriter with a taste for confessional lyrics and velvety vocals. Brightest Young Things calls her "One of DC's finest." She is a 2014 and 2015 Artist Fellow (DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities) and has won 4 Washington Area Music Awards with her duo The Sweater Set. As The Sweater Set, Sara has toured the United States, UK, and Ireland and has opened for Lucius, Pearl and The Beard, Dar Williams, Arc Iris, and Michelle Shocked.

Anousheh (RVA)

Anousheh is known for her epic melodies, and the Grammy-nominated songwriter has captivated audiences both overseas and in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia. She started writing at her piano as a young girl, and found a home in her first album, “Let the Ground Know Who’s Standing on Him”– an intimate collection of piano-driven musings and haunting melodies.

Shortly after this release, Anousheh went outside of her genre and into the whirlwind of International House music through her-chart topping collaborations with Deep Dish and DJ Sharam. What started as a few simple collaborations resulted in unprecedented success, including a top ten spot on the UK pop charts, global radio play and trip to the Grammys in 2006 for her “Say Hello” Best Dance Recording nomination. Anousheh released an EP in 2012 ("The Trouble I Find"), this past June Anousheh decided to turn to crowd-funding for her next album. With the help of some amazing friends, family and fans, Anousheh was able to raise $16k on Kickstarter for the production and release of her long-awaited full length.

Sammi Lanzetta:

Sammi Lanzetta + Friends is an anxiety rock band that plays songs about struggling to get through your day without crying (set to catchy melodies!)

Beer Meets Wood

Be it fresh or toasted oak, American or French, bourbon or wine-soaked, aged for months or years, or all funked up with wild yeast and bacteria, there's just something mysterious and magical about introducing beer to wood. To celebrate this union, we're hosting Beer Meets Wood on Saturday, September 23 at 58 Fore Street in Portland, Maine. Sponsored by Allagash Brewing Company.

Beer Meets Wood, a one-day, two-session festival, is set to be the largest collection of wood-aged beers on the East Coast. Attendees will be able to try over 200 beers from 20 states and Belgium. And among the more than 50 acclaimed breweries in attendance will be those like Rodenbach, which was founded in 1836 and has a long history of working with beer and wood, as well as upstarts such as Kings County Brewers Collective, which only opened its doors last year.

COLD BEAT with BIG NO

20170924

3-6PM

Richmond Taproom

Join us in the taproom with Manchu sliging wings all afternoon. San Fransisco's COLD BEAT, ex Grass Widow with RVA dreamers BIG NO on a hazy Sunday afternoon. Dark dream pop at it's finest. Cold Beat is not to be missed. Music for loners, lovers, and longshots will start at 330 PM and go until 545 PM.

Cold Beat

Fans and writers always tie singer and songwriter Hannah Lew's dormant band to her current one and perhaps rightfully so; Grass Widow set the post-2010s post-punk scene on fire. But over the four years of its existence, San Francisco's Cold Beat has made simultaneously dynamic and atmospheric post-punk that plays to Lew's songwriting acumen and surreal lyricism.

With the forthcoming Chaos By Invitation, mostly recorded by Phil Manley (Trans Am) at El Studio, Lew and her band lean into their pop sensibilities more than ever, and bring a load of synths with them. "62 Moons" is the first single, a synth-pop song that swims in crystalline guitars a la Modern English, with a Brill Building romanticism. In its final minute, a wistful, whistling monosynth lead launches the track from Earth, as Lew exhales her "fade to black."

Turns out space is the place for "62 Moons" — Lew says it's "a song about love taken for granted, analogous to the 62 moons of Saturn, in constant loving orbit around a beautiful siren planet with many satellites." NPR

Family Lifeline 140th Anniversary

20170930

1-5PM

Richmond Taproom

Come join Richmond's oldest non-profit, Family Lifeline, at Hardywood on Saturday, September 30th from 3pm-5pm to celebrate their 140 years of keeping Richmond residents healthy and happy!

We'll pre-game the party at 1pm, with an exclusive beer release of 'Health, Hope, & Hops', a 9% ABV, Wallonian-Style Saison - Light and effervescent, this Belgian farmhouse ale is floral in aroma, citrusy and bright on the palate and finishes dry with a hint of peppery spice. Dry hopped with Citra hops giving it the bit of citrus aroma, Saaz hops give a hint of spiciness; overall hazy, light gold in color, citrus, and earthiness in the nose. This beer is the perfect pairing from late summer into fall, with its golden tones.

Created and named in recognition of Family Lifeline’s 140th anniversary of bringing health and hope to the Greater Richmond community, Hardywood is honored to celebrate and support Family Lifeline and its work of strengthening the well-being and independence of families since 1877.

Established in 1877, Family Lifeline is an organization inspired by the work of their founders and driven by modern-day best practices. As the region’s largest provider of intensive home visitation services to at-risk families, their team of dedicated staff and volunteers are in the home of over 500 families daily, working to ensure 1) children are safe, healthy, and ready to learn and 2) older adults and persons with disabilities remain safely in their own homes for as long as possible.

Their premise is straightforward — strengthening families provides a foundation for success, two generations at a time. Family Lifeline works to solve the root of problems, building on assets, and creating lasting impact. They do this by partnering with individuals and families at critical points in their lives to strengthen overall well-being and independence through intensive home and community-based services.

Governess, BIG NO, Cigarette

20171006

6-10PM

Richmond Taproom

Sister Polygon Records takes over Hardywood! Two of Washington, DC's finest, Governess and Cigarette, are heading south with local support from BIG NO (Trashhh Girl Records).

Sister Polygon Records is a vital who's who of Washington DC's music scene. Full of incredibly talented musicians with a social awareness and punk intellect that leave it one the line each night.

Governess:

Mothers claim formidable space in rock and roll's greater body of subject matter (from Outkast's "Ms Jackson" to Danzig's "Mother" to the Shirelles "Mama Said" to Can's "Mother Sky") but rarely do the mothers get to speak for themselves. Governess' self-titled 8 song tape is a portrait of the traditional nuclear family through a lens often erased in the greater sociological landscape. What does it look like to be responsible for the unwaged labor of childcare and partnership? "We did not see our experiences being represented in any music we came across and wanted to create an honest and real representation," Says drummer Erin McCarley. She adds, "[The songs] may sound poppy and have some sweet melodies, but they are dark and come from a taboo place that most women and mothers do not speak of even amongst themselves." McCarley, Kieca Mahoney (bass) and Kim Weeks (guitar) live in the same neighborhood with their families. They met while organizing a parent-run cooperative preschool for their children and decided to write songs together.

Cigarette:

Ambient Shoegaze for dreamers. Killed it last time in town with The Make UP at Strange Matter.

Big No:

BIG NO began in 1994 when Nathan Grice was given his first guitar. However, the project was shelved a year later, at age 12, when his obsession to become rock star was replaced by an obsession to become professional basketball player. Sadly, our man is only 5’ 10” and the guitar soon was dusted off and the Nikes traded in for Converse with marker all over them or Doc Martens or whatever cool kids wore in the 90s. After moving to San Francisco in 2007 to play in some other guy's band that was great times and alright songs, Nathan’s friend DD taught him to record music on his dying MacBook. Between the computer and the bedroom 4track dozens of songs were recorded using every kind of instrument and sound, including BART trains. Finally in 2009 Nathan quit the other guy's band and began his search for the 'dream band'. But, as many know, no one wants to be in YOUR band playing YOUR songs, although you are welcome to be in THEIR band playing THEIR songs. So Nathan played solo, and it was awesome and finally his dream band did form: Heather on piano, Ian on drums, and Tyler playing bass. But like any reasonable man who gets what he wants, he left. Nathan and Heather moved to Virginia where a new dream bassist, Leah, was waiting. BIG NO is playing shows and writing new hits about the dancing Donna's and crying Angela's of our lives. Many have sat on drums, But Shanna and Kyle have been the go to's. Their influences are the band from Fire Walk With Me that is playing while Donna is dancing all slutty, Prince and Einsturende Neubauten.

New Release: Hardywood Hoax!

20171028

1:00 - 10:00PM

Richmond Taproom

BIG announcement, friends!

Let's get started with the good news: Introducing Hardywood Hoax!

Hardywood Hoax is our base imperial milk stout, Cassowary, aged in brandy barrels for 10 months (these barrels housed traditional grape brandy). Hoax is another behemoth of a beer, joining its fellow crafty misfits, Trickery, Foolery & Ruse at 13.5% ABV, yet remaining unbelievably smooth. Expect a super chewy milk stout with bold oak tannins and notes of grape jam, ripe plums and dried dates. Quantities and bottle limits are TBD. Mark your calendars for October 28 and stay tuned for updates!

But wait, is this a trick? Where's Trickery?

Unfortunately, there will be no Trickery in 2017. There isn't a whole lot of apple brandy produced here in the states, making it difficult to source apple brandy barrels. When the time came to get Trickery into barrels, there were no apple brandy barrels to be found. We couldn't dream of depriving your tastebuds of this anticipated Fall release entirely, so we brought in as many brandy barrels as we could find (a grand total of 4 brandy barrels!) and we're excited to continue our playful approach to this series.

But wait, there's MORE GOOD NEWS!

Ultimately, we were able to get our hands on a limited number of apple brandy barrels in time to put them right to work. We are thrilled to re-introduce Apple Brandy GBS to our lineup of seasonal GBS variants this year! More details about Apple Brandy GBS will be coming at you soon, along with exciting information about our entire Gingerbread Stout season!

DORI FREEMAN

Dori Freeman's debut album is the kind of country folk record that hits you like a train: stunningly gorgeous, lyrically rich and thoughtfully executed. Born and raised in Galax, VA, Freeman's lilting vocals are reminiscent of Emmylou Harris.

"The purity of Dori Freeman's voice and the directness of her songwriting reflect not only her Appalachian hometown - Galax, Va. - but also a determined classicism, a rejection of the ways modern country punches itself up for radio and arenas." - Jon Pareles, The New York Times

PHOEBE HUNT & THE GATHERERS

An accomplished Americana instrumentalist with foundations in jazz and swing music, Phoebe Hunt (formerly of the Belleville Outfit) readies to release Shanti's Shadow. It's the culmination of a five year journey that has taken her from her Austin roots through Music Row, Brooklyn, and even to India to study with seventh-generation master violinist Kala Ramnath.

“Shanti is exploration and discovery, meditative and excited, unfurling wonders at every turn." - AUSTIN CHRONICLE
