Hardywood Park Tap Takeover!

20170829

6-11PM

Taproom

For our last Virginia Craft Brew Month Steal the Glass Night, we're going out BIG(LY) with Hardywood Park Craft Brewery! We'll be featuring their VIPA Virgindia Pale Ale, Blackberry Wheat, Cuvée Peach, and the highly sought-after 2016 Gingerbread Stout on draft... Trivia at 8PM, followed by Jady Bugg Open Mic! #BrewWithPurpose #ThereWillBeGBS Lifelong Friends The story of how Hardywood Park Craft Brewery came to be is quite literally as old as its co-founders, Eric McKay and Patrick Murtaugh. Their parents met first, setting the stage for a childhood friendship that would develop over decades into a shared passion for craft beer. While honing their craft as home brewers, Eric and Pat built the foundation for Hardywood Park by experiencing craft beer culture and learning every facet of the industry. Eric McKay, while working as the marketing director for one of America’s leading craft beer wholesalers, built an innovative mobile beer marketing platform, served as a speaker on beer marketing strategy innovation at several beer industry conferences around the country, earned his MBA with honors from Fordham University and was selected to serve as a Great American Beer Festival judge. He also became Richmond’s first Certified Cicerone™... In the fall of 2001 Eric, for study, and Patrick, for travel, met up in Australia at Hardywood Park, a sheep station outside of Bathurst, New South Wales. The owners, the Crawford family, had graciously hosted Eric during his orientation trip where he spent his days working on the farm and his evenings enjoying a home cooked meal and a glass of David Crawford’s delicious home brewed amber ale. The degree of flavor and complexity in David’s beer was enlightening, and from that moment on, Eric and Patrick have devoted themselves wholly to the pursuit of brewing world class ales and lagers, and introducing people to the joy of authentic, hand crafted beer. The original Hardywood Park sheep station has changed owners and names, but the name lives on in Hardywood Park Craft Brewery as a tribute to David Crawford, whose beer inspired Eric and Patrick’s quest... Founded in Richmond, Virginia, by lifelong friends, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery has been soulfully brewing beer since 2011. Today, Hardywood operates a brewery and taproom in Richmond. A brewery and taproom is slated to open in Charlottesville in 2017. In 2018, Hardywood will open a new $28M brewing facility and beer campus in Goochland, Virginia. Hardywood beers have earned international acclaim with medals at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival, as well as a rare 100 rating by BeerAdvocate Magazine.

The Pinkerton Raid

Time was, The Pinkerton Raid's Jesse James DeConto would spend his days writing about murder and mayhem as a newspaper reporter. Almost every day, he'd drive from his former home in Carrboro to the Orange County Courthouse in Hillsborough, N.C.

Driving north on Highway 86, he'd pass a traffic sign that said "TOLERANCE ENDS." It was meant for big-rig truckers, to tell them to detour off the country road and get on the sturdier Interstate 85.

Something about crime reporting that most people don't know: There's a lot of waiting around. You sit there in court, waiting for a judge to make a ruling, waiting for a lawyer to show up, waiting for a defendant to be brought over from the jail.

"I'd be watching people's lives falling apart – or already having fallen apart – and I was watching a seven-year relationship falling apart in my own life, thinking about what went wrong, what was next for me," Jesse says. "I'd just sit there writing lyrics in my reporter's notebook."

Out of those vulnerable moments sprang the songs from Tolerance Ends, Love Begins, The Pinkerton Raid's third full-length album.

What started with intimate, personal storytelling became a communal experience with instrumentation evolving over the next seven years, as Jesse handed off songs like "Tolerance Ends," "Hollywood," and "Deeper Than Skin" for his sister Katie to take lead vocals.

The siblings built many of the arrangements around their brother Steven's acoustic guitar, layering Eric Johnson and Michael DePue's electric guitars with the expansive drumming of Steve Anderson (Kamara Thomas & The Night Drivers) and the twee textures of Chimeatron, ukulele and brass. Wilson Greene (Look Homeward, Mipso) added guitars and banjo. Recorded with Mark Simonsen (The Old Ceremony, Dead Tongues) and Thom Canova at Mitch Easter's Fidelitorium and at Studio M in the spring of 2016, Tolerance Ends, Love Begins is a story of broken love and resurrection, their most hopeful collection to date.

Lobo Marino (RVA)

Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price make up the world fusion folk band Lobo Marino. They are also the founders of the Earth Folk Collective and Fonticello Food Forest Project in Richmond, Virginia. Deeply dedicated to environmental and social justice, when traveling they carry in the music a message of humanity's need for reconnection with the earth. While at home they spend time community organizing and running their homestead and donation based education center The Earth Folk Collective.

The Folly (RVA)

Forming in the spring of 2015, THE FOLLY brought together Richmond, VA songwriters Jordan Lette and Anneliese Grant, as well as a collection of backing musicians; each member bringing their own stylistic technique to the group. Being as the band has an array of musical influences, THE FOLLY's dynamic sound is structured around a base of eclecticism. The songwriting is catchy and inviting, yet unique and abstract in an alluring fashion, blending familiar classic feeling with modern sounds. The band often invites multi-instrumentalists in recording and generates energetic on-stage performances. All of these aspects allow for the creation that is THE FOLLY experience.

About Shane Cooley

Shane Cooley isn't concerned about the voices in his head. For half of his 29 years, they have given him answers in the form of song. He has officially released seven albums and EPs, and currently has over fifty songs that have not been recorded..and counting. His sound, a majestic blend of mainly folk, rock and blues, has a seasoned uniqueness. His tell-tale voice and emotionally driven live performances can give you goosebumps, both solo and with his band. The poetry in his lyrics, however, are what give him his high caliber.

His seventh and latest release, Kings Highway, was produced by Bob Rupe (Sparklehorse,Cracker), and received critical acclaim from Austin Chronicle writer Jim Caligiuri, hailing him as a "substantial songsmith." The album also received airplay from radio stations in the U.S. and Europe, including NPR station KUTX in Austin. His work has been recognized by songwriting contests such as the International Acoustic Music Awards and Mountain Stage NewSong Contest. His songs have also been placed on television shows including NBC's "The Mysteries of Laura," and IBC's "The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman." He also composed the music for the Amazon/Onion Creek Productions' book preview for "Tough Love," by New York Times Bestseller Lori Foster.

Shane wrote his first song when he was ten years old, in a rural part of Virginia known as the Northern Neck. He played his first show at age thirteen. After graduating with an English degree from the The College of William and Mary in 2010, he took to the road, booking his own tours throughout the U.S. and a European tour in 2012. He has spent the past few years in Austin, TX, where he has been honing his skills and marinating his sound in one of the world's most active music scenes. Over the years, Shane's prolific songwriting has become an impressive catalog, and he has been known played four-hour shows of his own original music.

About Paulo Franco

Paulo Franco is a Richmond, Virginia based singer/ songwriter. In terms of recording, it may seem that Franco has come to the game later in life than some, but his musical journey has been a lifelong story. Born to Colombian immigrants and raised in Washington D.C., Paulo embraces his heritage as a first generation American and his songs and style reflect that. As a child, his father turned him on to the country music of the United States via the Johnny Cash Variety show and on his own he discovered a love for rock n roll through the Stones and the Beatles. At the age of nine, he picked up a classical guitar and a musician was born. After years of playing in various cover bands and honing his chops, Franco began writing his own material in earnest in 2010.

Paulo's songs are steeped in storytelling, often drawing from his own life and those around him. The sound is a seamless blend of the myriad of influences that have shaped both his everyday life and his musical tastes. Listeners will find glimpses John Prine's wit, The Stones' rock n roll heart, and the fluidity of The Grateful Dead often times infused with the rhythms of traditional Latin and Colombian music. He has recently included original Spanish songs into his songwriting as well, bringing a depth and a love of two cultures seldom seen during the same show or album. Paulo switches his voice from country twang, to rock anthem, to Spanish troubadour. His vocals are so authentically Spanish that it’s easy to forget you just heard him effortlessly sing a country tune in English.

In the last few years he has shared the stage with the likes of Dan Baird and Homemade Sin, Chris Knight, Adam Carroll, Cris Jacobs, Cory Branan and many others. 2016 saw Franco's latest release, The Last Card, an album No Depression calls “a phenomenal sophomore record.” No Depression's Emily Hinde listed The Last Card at No. 2 of the year's best, behind only Avett Brothers. Paste Magazine hails Franco's effort as possibly the most sincere album of the year. The Last Card, produced by Bob Rupe (The Silos, Cracker, Gutterball and Sparklehorse) and featuring a virtual who's who of Richmond musicians, shows that Franco wears his heart on his sleeve musically and can hang with any songwriter working today. The next year will find Paulo following up on the national attention the record is receiving with more shows and a wider range of national touring and a tour of Colombia.
