Andrew Leahey

Andrew Leahey & the Homestead make music for city highways and open horizons, for pop fans and roots rockers, for the heart as well as the heartland.

They're an American rock & roll band, bypassing the sub-genres and trends that come and go every decade and, instead, focusing on the anthemic, guitar-driven sound that's been blasting out of car stereos at 65 mile per hour ever since God created FM radio. Written in the wake of an emergency brain surgery operation that nearly wiped out Leahey's hearing, "Skyline in Central Time" is the band's collective rallying cry, an album that funnels desperation and gratitude and heartbreak -- as well as a lot of guitar solos -- into eleven tracks produced by Wilco co-founder Ken Coomer. Here's to second chances.

Taproom opens at 4PM with live music starting at 6:30PM FREE and open to the public. Hardywood West Creek address: 820 Sanctuary Trail Drive, Richmond VA 23238

Patrick Sweany 7:30-9PM

After 7 critically acclaimed records (two produced by longtime collaborator Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys), Patrick has expanded his touring radius to 49 states and Europe. He's played premiere festivals (Newport Folk Fest, Merlefest, Montreal Jazz Fest, Telluride Blues & Brews) and supported international acts such as The Black Keys, The Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Wood Brothers, Hot Tuna, and others on tour.

His forthcoming record, Ancient Noise, comes out in Spring 2018. It was recorded at historic Sam Phillips Recording by acclaimed producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margot Price) and features an all-star backing band: Ken Coomer on drums (ex-Wilco), Ted Pecchio on bass (Doyle Bramhall II, Susan Tedeschi), and the legendary Charles Hodges on keys (Al Green). Ancient Noise is a great amalgam of Sweany's evolving sounds, from the gritty blues of the openers "Old Time Ways" and "Up & Down," to the piano-based ballad "Country Loving." "We also added a lot more funk to this record," says Sweany. "There's a definite nod to the Deep South 70s sound of Allen Toussaint productions and Little Feat jams."

6:30-10PM

Richmond Taproom

We start the day at 1PM with the release of a favorite summer sipper, Hardywood Peach Tripel! An incredible lineup of FREE live tunes will kick off in the evening, featuring Spaceface, Gull and Father Sunflower. Set times and food trucks TBA.

Spaceface (Members of Flaming Lips) listen HERE

The group is led by Jake Ingalls who also plays guitar and synthesizer in The Flaming Lips. The experience reflects that influence, as it works to bring the concert grade experience to a club level. Spaceface's music offers a refreshing approach on psychedelic rock, with transparent '70s references but also strikingly modern elements that make this trick something to behold. Their new record, “Sun Kids” is hazy, psychedelic pop music, elegantly composed. They are touring in support of it nationally.

They have just returned from a west coast tour, and have sold out venues across the nation. The new LP called "Sun Kids" via Behind The Curtains Media, 24 West, and Friends Records. The new album features artists Mikaela Davis, as well as Julien Baker. Engineered by Calvin Lauber of Ardent Studios in Memphis, TN, and mixed at Blatchwatch Studios in Norman, Oklahoma by Jake Ingalls and Jarod Evans, who most recently coproduced and mixed with Broncho, and worked on Sufjan Stevens' "Carrie And Lowell".

Gull (RVA) - Nathaniel Rappole’s solo project Gull is best described as a drum; a living, breathing, squawking drum that cries out assorted music of creatures past and delivers it from a single unique perspective.

Father Sunflower (RVA) listen HERE

Skate and Destroy Night: Blood and Steel Screening

20180428

6-9:30PM

Richmond Taproom

Drafts are flowing from 4-10PM this Saturday with a 6PM screening of Blood and Seel: Cedar Crest Country Club, FREE live music and Arroz RVA's mobile menu.

The film documents the roots of the D.C. DIY underground skateboarding and punk music scene of the 80s and where it all converged: Cedar Crest Country Club – It features the artists, bands and the characters that made history there, with heavy hitters such as Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat / Fugazi/ Dischord Rcds), members of GWAR, Scream and Government Issue, as well as boasting a who’s who of famous skaters including Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, Rob Mertz, Fred Smith, Tony Magnusson, Allen Losi and many more.

Utilizing a vast collection of archival photos and video, punctuated with interviews of the people that were there, the film is a compelling story sound tracked with the music that fueled the era including artists from DC’s own, Dischord Records, GWAR, the Bad Brains and Metallica.

Check out teasers HERE

Bands:

Death Birds Surf Club (Garage, Surf)

Death Birds Surf Club blends surf, pop and punk. Think Beach Boys meets the Ramones, but they actually surf. Their catchy lyrics sear like blisters after a long day at the beach- NO SUNSCREEN! Bangers like "Surf Babe" and "Half-pipe Girl" make you want to grab a board and get gnarly. Brothers Adam and Bean Weatherford write songs about what they do when they're not writing songs...SHRED! Tapes are available now on our webstore and locally at Steady Sounds.

Haircut (Hardcore)

Originally formed in nearby Charlottesville, VA (and opening countless shows at the legendary Magnolia House), Haircut released a strong demo at the end of 2016 before landing just down I-64 in Richmond. The speed and precision displayed across "Shutting Down" is rarely captured so well on a band's first record, but the execution on these five tracks (all of which burn through in 60-90 seconds) is hard to match. Just as essential to this release are Juliana's tireless, outspoken lyrics (both in English + Spanish) and vocal delivery which echoes from a very candid perspective often missing in contemporary punk and hardcore. A standout EP devoid of any gimmickry or trend-worship. Simply pure, classic hardcore punk.
