In 2011, as just the second brewery in Richmond, Hardywood opened with a series of daring beers that gave life to its’ founders’ vision for experimental brewing that showcased gourmet, locally sourced ingredients and creative processes that yielded hand-filled corked and caged offerings that were totally unique, and extremely rare. Beers in this series have earned World Beer Cup awards, GABF, VCBC, and AIBA gold medals, an AIBA Major Trophy, and a perfect 100 score in BeerAdvocate. They have garnered national headlines, and drawn lines of over a thousand enthusiasts. This series was known as the Reserve Series.

After a decade of exciting growth to become one of Virginia’s leading craft brewers, and several years of unprecedented pandemic-induced challenge, the Hardywood team is getting back to its roots with a reinvigorated commitment to bringing small-batch, creative, one-of-a-kind offerings to those who appreciate access to extraordinary beer, curated events (in-person and virtual), and the finest exclusive brewery merch available. Cognac Barrel-aged Munichwine - 14% ABV - 750 ml bottle ($24.95)

Mid-January Release

A showcase of Munich Malt at its finest, this Munichwine boasts a malt bill crafted solely from rich Munich Malts, with an extended boil to deepen its flavor and color. Aged in exquisite imported cognac barrels since February 2021, this beer has matured for an incredible 46 months, evolving into a singularly refined and captivating creation.

The aroma reveals a bouquet of dark fruits—black currants, ripe plums, and dried figs—while the flavor profile is reminiscent of an aged tawny port. Sweet fruit and caramel notes dominate the initial sip, gradually giving way to a dry, warming finish that is both smooth and complex. Balancing sweetness and dryness with a fortified wine-like sophistication, this Munichwine is a one-of-a-kind experience, exclusively available to our Reserve Society members.

Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Wheatwine - 14% ABV - 4pk 12oz Cans ($24.95)

January Release

This rare Wheatwine begins with a malt bill composed of 60% Weyerman Wheat Malt, 30% Simpsons Marris otter Malt, 5% CaraAmber Malt, and 4% Gambrinus Honey Malt, boiled for an extended time to develop a rich, complex base. After fermentation, the beer was carefully transferred into premium Heaven Hill Rye Whiskey barrels in December 2021. Over the course of 36 months, these barrels have imparted a sophisticated depth of flavor, resulting in a truly exceptional beer.

Pouring a gorgeous burnt umber color, this Wheatwine greets the senses with the inviting aroma of toasted wheat, gentle rye spice, and a touch of sweetness. On the palate, waves of dark fruit, toffee, and caramel unfold, with hints of cherry and chocolate adding layers of complexity. The finish is warm and lingering, a testament to the beer’s long maturation and careful craftsmanship. Perfect for savoring, this is an exclusive treasure for our Reserve Society members.

Cherry Brandy Barrel-Finished Barleywine - 13.72% ABV - 750 ml bottle ($24.95)

February Release

Meticulously brewed with Simpsons Finest Marris Otter Malted Barley, a touch of Crystal Malt, and boiled for hours to amplify its richness, this barleywine was aged in Cherry Brandy finishing barrels—originally ex-Bourbon Barrels—since January 2023. These barrels were acquired from Harvest Spirits Farm Distillery out of Valatie in upstate New York. These barrels are years in the making, soaking sweet Bing cherries in 3-year-old Applejack and finishing for an extra year in bourbon barrels. After we got our hands on them, we aged the Barleywine for nearly 24 months resulting in a beer of remarkable depth and elegance.

The nose offers tantalizing aromas of toffee and cherries, while the first sip delivers flavors of sweet maraschino cherries, caramel, and a subtle hint of sweet vermouth. With its luscious sweetness upfront and a finish that mirrors the dryness and balance of a finely crafted Manhattan, this Barleywine offers a velvety smooth drinking experience. The cherry notes linger beautifully, making this a standout offering exclusively for our Reserve Society members.
