Thomas Wakefield describes his Richmond-based ensemble as “Spanish Guitar-Infused Tropical Jazz.” He has performed annually for Lake Anna Jazz, assembling groups in the spirit of guitar legend Django Rheinhart and European gypsy influences, or even Scotch-Irish folk music mixed with jazz to rekindle old sounds for a new century. Each of his groups emphasize acoustic performances, whether done with string, brass, percussion, woodwind, or any other traditional instruments. On a Thomas Wakefield gig, it isn’t surprising to see a guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and bouzouki lined up together on the stage.
